Cozygodfvther's debut single "Unda bo ta? (where u at)" produced by darius.m4a and Cozygodfvther, dropped today on SoundCloud, accompanied by a music video directed and produced by UNOBSTRUCTED. The track will be available on streaming services next week.
Sonically, the track is a unique blend of DnB, alien-adjacent vocals, and ambient influences, seamlessly fused with Xander's flow in Papiamento. It's rare to hear this combination in the language, but one of the closest references that comes to mind is "555 Sin Coriente" by The Islanders, directed by the legendary Ken Wolff. Released 18 years ago on YouTube, that video was ahead of its time. If you're unfamiliar, Ken Wolff is an Aruban filmmaker who shot and directed many of the iconic music videos we grew up watching on TV and YouTube.
When I was in Aruba, I told Xander that we were going to shoot something, just like I did the year prior with "Might Not Be Enough." Minimal planning and just going with the flow. The idea for the video came up while we were eating Wendy’s before heading out to start shooting. I already knew I wanted to incorporate a backseat shot and blacked-out background with a lightbar. Before we shot this, we shot a quick video for another song featuring Xander and another talented Aruban artist, Neolesh. That shoot took place at a beach, and my original idea was to connect both videos narratively, with "Unda Bo Ta" serving as a prelude, showing Cozygodfvther on his way to the beach. However, the concept evolved into its own thing as we started shooting. But hey, maybe I’ll find a way to connect both still; I still have to edit that one.
The video is a portal into Cozygodfvther's psyche, where the reference to the beach becomes more than just a destination, “Late night bandi beach unda bota?” (late night at the beach, where u at?) It’s an abstract space of longing and escape. Whether he’s missing someone, something, or just searching for clarity, the meaning remains fluid. Interpret it how you want; that’s the beauty of it anyways, right? The video was shot by me and Raymar Croes, who helped capture low-shutter footage and a 2nd angle that turned out to come out clutch for the whole project. We filmed in three locations: inside a bar, inside my car’s backseat, and at the beach. We started around 19:00 and ended sometime around midnight.
When I got back to the Netherlands, I started editing, threw that classic green filter on top, made cuts, then I processed the footage through an old Blaupunkt DVM 2000 video mixer, which I bought for 7 euros at a thrift store a while back. You can barely find any info about it online, but it did wonders for this project. I went through multiple versions, with Richard Geerman and Nilesh Thani lending a hand in the final stages. One person operated a camcorder to create a feedback loop effect, somebody else inserted and twisted cables to generate glitches, and I was jumping around pressing buttons and switching between scenes.
The end result? An epilepsy-inducing, high-energy video that welcomes you into the mind of COZYGODFVTHER.
