AUG6ST IN NL [INTERVIEW & BTS]

Back in July 2025, artist AUG6ST traveled to the Netherlands to film two music videos for the tracks “TOO MUCH LIKE MY MAMA” and “#FREEX #FREECOZY.” What started as a straightforward shoot quickly turned into four days of production, exploration, and reflection on the artist’s origins.
Part of the filming took place in Amersfoort, specifically on Everstenstraat, where Jonathan, known today as AUG6ST, was born and raised until the age of five before moving to Bonaire. Returning to this place added another layer to the project. During the shoot we spoke about his early life, how he first began making music, and the transition from his former artist name Antartica into the identity he now carries as AUG6ST. The conversation also touched on how his artistic values and outlook have evolved over time.
Alongside the interview, behind the scenes footage shot by Maya vd Kruit and Terrence Martinez offers a closer look at the production process behind both videos.
For me, these videos marked an important moment. AUG6ST was one of the first commissioned music video projects I took on last year, and the experience created a kind of butterfly effect that led to further collaborations and productions. Some of those projects are already out, like the documentary surrounding the Taste of Bonaire exhibition “PATRAS DEN STUDIO”, and others are still on the way, including new work with RI-FLEX, which is currently in the editing phase.
The process of making the videos was both fun and challenging. It meant learning how to plan a full production, rent equipment, scout locations, and coordinate a small team. Throughout it all AUG6ST trusted the vision we had and we simply went for it.
This was very much an ABC island production, creatives from the Caribbean coming together to make something happen abroad. The shoot was made possible in part through the support of our friend and collaborator Yunil Jeon, who at the time provided one of the studio spaces where parts of the videos were filmed.
If you have not seen the videos yet, now is the time to tap in. Both tracks appear on AUG6ST’s project SUBTANCE GALORE, which is packed with more heat beyond these singles.
